Short answer: Perplexity publishes no Apple Watch app. It ships iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web. The watch apps you will find with Perplexity in the name are built by other people against Perplexity’s API — this one included.
Why this provider is different from the other four
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok are language models that can search the web if you turn it on. Perplexity’s Sonar models are search engines that answer in sentences — every response is built from pages fetched at the moment you ask.
On a wrist that difference is sharper than it is on a laptop. Watch questions skew factual and current: what time does it close, what is the score, how much is that in euros, is the line running. A model answering from training data may be confidently a year out of date. Sonar looks it up.
These are the Perplexity models AskWatch offers today:
| Model | Can do | Included in |
|---|---|---|
| Sonar | web search, images | your own key |
| Sonar Pro | web search, images | your own key |
| Sonar | web search, images | AskWatch+ |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | web search, images | your own key |
| Sonar Deep Research | web search | your own key |
Read from the app’s live model catalog.
Answers that show their sources
With your own Perplexity key, answers arrive with the pages they were built from, and you can open them. That is the whole reason to choose this provider over a general model with web search switched on: you can check it.
On a watch you will mostly hear the answer rather than read the citations — the sources are there when you pick the conversation up on iPhone, iPad or Mac, which is where you would actually follow a link anyway.
The honest limitations
Two, and they matter for how you use it.
No Live Conversation. Perplexity publishes no realtime voice API, so there is no live back-and-forth — you dictate, it answers, it reads the answer aloud. Only ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok support Live, and you can switch to one on the watch itself.
Deep Research is not a wrist feature. Sonar Deep Research does genuinely thorough work and takes its time doing it. Starting one from a watch means standing there. Start those on iPhone or Mac; the conversation is shared, so you can hear the result later from your wrist.
Two ways to pay
Your own Perplexity key
Paste an API key once on iPhone and the whole list is open on every device. You pay Perplexity directly, AskWatch takes nothing, and this is the route that gives you the sources with each answer. The key is stored in iCloud Keychain and reaches your other devices by itself.
Or subscribe
AskWatch+ and AskWatch Ultra include a managed Sonar model, so you can try the search-first style without opening an API account. AskWatch+ covers Sonar.
A Perplexity Pro subscription does not carry over — it covers Perplexity’s own apps, while the Sonar API bills separately.
Setting it up
- Install on iPhone. One App Store listing covers iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and CarPlay.
- Choose Perplexity and paste a key from your Perplexity API settings, or start a subscription.
- Install on Apple Watch from the Watch app on your iPhone and set Sonar as the model the watch starts on. Many people keep Perplexity on the wrist and a reasoning model on the Mac — the choice is per device for exactly this reason.
Questions people actually ask
Is there an official Perplexity app for Apple Watch?
No. Perplexity ships iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and web. Watch apps carrying the name are third-party.
Does it really search the web every time?
That is what the Sonar models do — they retrieve and then answer. It is the provider’s design, not a toggle in this app.
Does my Perplexity Pro plan work?
No. Pro covers Perplexity’s own apps; the API is separate. Use an API key, or an AskWatch subscription with the managed Sonar model.
Can I hear the sources read out?
The answer is read aloud; the source list is something you look at, and it is waiting for you on iPhone, iPad or Mac in the same conversation.
Does it work without my iPhone nearby?
Yes, once settings have been cached, on a cellular Apple Watch or over Wi-Fi.
The same watch, other models
- ChatGPT on Apple Watch — the largest line-up, and Live.
- Claude on Apple Watch — Anthropic, longer answers, no realtime voice.
- Gemini on Apple Watch — on Wear OS from Google, on watchOS only like this.
- Grok on Apple Watch — xAI, with Grok’s own voices reading answers.
