Short answer: there is no Grok app for Apple Watch. xAI publishes Grok for iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, with no watchOS companion — so no complication and nothing to open from a watch face. Reaching Grok from a wrist means a Shortcut you build yourself, or a third-party app with your xAI API key.
Three models, and that is the point
Every other provider here gives you eight to sixteen models and a decision to make. xAI gives you three, they are all current, and they all do the same things — reasoning, images, tool use. On a screen the size of a watch face, a short list is a feature rather than a compromise.
| Model | Can do | Included in |
|---|---|---|
| Grok 4.7 | reasoning, images | your own key |
| Grok 4.6 | reasoning, images | your own key |
| Grok 4.3 | reasoning, images | your own key |
| Grok 4.5 | reasoning, images | your own key |
Read from the app’s live model catalog, so it follows xAI’s releases.
The thing only Grok does here: it speaks in its own voice
Every provider in AskWatch answers in text, and something has to read that text aloud — normally Apple’s built-in speech, OpenAI’s cloud voices or ElevenLabs. xAI is the only provider where the same API key does both. Your Grok key covers the answer and the voice that reads it, from one account and one bill.
Grok also has a realtime voice model, so it is one of only three providers in the app that supports Live Conversation — speech both ways at once, interruptible mid-answer. Anthropic and Perplexity publish no realtime API at all.
Grok is bring-your-own-key only
This is the one page here where there is no second option, and it is worth being plain about. AskWatch+ and AskWatch Ultra do not include managed Grok. The managed tiers cover OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity models; xAI is not among them, and a subscription will not unlock it.
So to use Grok on your wrist you need an xAI API key. The upside is that bringing your own key has never cost anything in AskWatch and is not going to — you pay xAI for what you use, the app takes nothing, and every model above is open from the first minute.
Setting it up
- Install on iPhone. One App Store listing covers iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and CarPlay.
- Get an xAI API key from console.x.ai and paste it once. It is stored in iCloud Keychain, so your other devices pick it up without being typed again.
- Install on Apple Watch from the Watch app on your iPhone. If you want Grok reading the answers too, set the voice to Grok in the speech settings — that is the same key doing double duty.
What it will not do
- No subscription route. An API key is the only way in for xAI, unlike every other provider on these pages.
- No document reading. Grok’s models here handle text and images; files are not part of the line-up, on any device.
- Web search is not part of the Grok models in this app. If a question needs live sources, Perplexity or a web-search-capable OpenAI or Google model is the better pick, and switching takes a tap.
- No images from the wrist. Grok reads pictures, but only where you can hand it one — iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- It needs a connection. Settings are cached; answers are not.
Questions people actually ask
Is there a Grok Apple Watch app?
Not from xAI. Grok is iPhone, iPad, Android and web. On Apple Watch you need a third-party app or a Shortcut.
How do I use Grok on Apple Watch?
Install AskWatch on iPhone, paste an xAI API key, install the watch app from the Watch app on your iPhone, then ask out loud. A Shortcut calling the xAI API from the watch is the free alternative and gives you one round trip without conversation or a spoken answer.
Does my X Premium or SuperGrok subscription work?
No. Those cover xAI’s own apps and grok.com. The API is billed separately, which is what a third-party app has to use.
Can I use Grok without paying xAI?
No — and unlike the other providers here, an AskWatch subscription does not cover it either. Grok on this app means an xAI key. If you want an AI on your wrist with no API account at all, start with ChatGPT or Gemini, both of which are in the managed tiers.
Does it work without my iPhone nearby?
Yes, once settings have been cached, on a cellular Apple Watch or over Wi-Fi.
The same watch, other models
- ChatGPT on Apple Watch — the largest line-up, and a managed tier with no key needed.
- Claude on Apple Watch — Anthropic, longer answers, no realtime voice.
- Gemini on Apple Watch — on Wear OS from Google, on watchOS only like this.
- Perplexity on Apple Watch — answers that cite their sources.
