Short answer: Gemini runs on Wear OS, not on Apple Watch. Google shipped Gemini to Wear OS smartwatches and supports it there; watchOS is a different platform and Google publishes nothing for it. There is no Gemini app, no complication and no watch face shortcut from Google. What works on Apple Watch is a third-party app talking to Google’s API.
Why Wear OS and not watchOS
Wear OS is Google’s own platform, so Gemini arriving there was a decision Google could make alone. Apple Watch is not, and Google has shown no sign of building for it — the Gemini iPhone app has no Apple Watch companion, which is the piece that would be needed.
So if you are on Apple Watch and you want Gemini, the question is not when will Google ship it. It is which third-party app you trust with an API key. This is one answer; a hand-built Shortcut is another, and it is free.
What AskWatch gives you
Speak from your wrist, get the answer on screen and read aloud. The watch keeps working with your iPhone out of range once settings are cached, and the same conversation continues on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and CarPlay.
These are the Google models AskWatch offers today:
| Model | Can do | Included in |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.1 Pro | reasoning, web search, images, documents | Ultra |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | reasoning, web search, images, documents | Ultra |
| Gemini 3.7 Flash | reasoning, web search, images, documents | AskWatch+ |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | reasoning, web search, images, documents | AskWatch+ |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | reasoning, web search, images, documents | your own key |
| Gemini 2.5 Flash | reasoning, web search, images, documents | your own key |
| Gemini 3 Flash | reasoning, web search, images, documents | your own key |
| Gemini 2.5 Pro | reasoning, web search, images, documents | your own key |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite | reasoning, web search, images, documents | your own key |
| Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite | web search, images, documents | your own key |

| Gemma 4 26B | images, documents | your own key |
| Gemma 4 31B | images, documents | your own key |
Taken from the app’s live model catalog, so it moves when Google’s line-up does.
Gemini is the cheapest way to run this
Google’s Flash and Flash-Lite tiers are the least expensive models in the whole app, and on a wrist that matters more than it does on a desktop: watch questions are short, frequent and rarely need a flagship. A weather question, a conversion, a “what was that actor called” — Flash-Lite answers those for a fraction of what a reasoning model costs, and faster.
The list also includes Gemma, Google’s open models under an Apache 2.0 licence. They are there for people who prefer an openly licensed model and are willing to trade some capability for it.
Live Conversation, with Gemini as the default
In Live mode, speech runs both ways at once — you can interrupt, redirect or ask for a shorter answer while it is still talking. Gemini’s native-audio realtime model is what AskWatch starts a managed Live session on by default, because it is the best balance of latency and cost in the group.
Only three of the app’s providers publish a realtime voice API at all: Google, OpenAI and xAI. Anthropic and Perplexity do not, so with those you get dictation and a spoken answer, not a live exchange.
One honest caveat. Live’s language coverage is Google’s, not the app’s. AskWatch itself is localised into 33 languages, but a realtime session speaks the languages Google’s realtime model supports, and that list is shorter. If Live answers you in the wrong language, that is where it comes from — ordinary Voice Chat is not affected.
Two ways to pay
Your own Google AI key
Paste a key from Google AI Studio once on iPhone and everything above is open on every device you own. You pay Google directly. Keys are stored in iCloud Keychain, so they reach your other devices without being typed again.
Or subscribe and skip the key
AskWatch+ and AskWatch Ultra include managed Gemini models and managed Live, so there is no Google Cloud account to set up. AskWatch+ covers Gemini 3.7 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash. Ultra adds Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.8 Flash.
A Google One AI subscription does not carry over — that covers Google’s own apps, while the Gemini API bills separately. Same split as every other provider here.
Setting it up
- Install on iPhone. One App Store listing covers iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and CarPlay.
- Choose Google and either paste a key from aistudio.google.com or start a subscription.
- Install on Apple Watch from the Watch app on your iPhone, then pick the model the watch starts on — Flash-Lite is the sensible wrist default even if your Mac is set to Pro.
What it will not do
- It is not the Wear OS experience. No always-listening hotword, no system integration, no replacing Siri. You open an app or a complication.
- No images or documents from the wrist. Gemini reads both, but only where you can hand it a file.
- Live speaks Google’s languages, which is a shorter list than the app’s 33.
- It needs a connection. Settings are cached; answers are not.
Questions people actually ask
Is there a Gemini app for Apple Watch?
Not from Google. Google supports Gemini on Wear OS watches; on Apple Watch you need a third-party app or a Shortcut.
Will Google make one?
Nothing has been announced. Building it would mean shipping an Apple Watch companion inside the Gemini iPhone app, and that does not exist today.
Can I use a Gemini Shortcut instead?
Yes, and for a single question it is a perfectly good free answer. What a Shortcut will not give you is a conversation that remembers the last turn, a spoken answer, a model picker or Live.
Does it work on Apple Watch Ultra?
Yes, and Ultra has the loudest speaker of the range — which matters here, because the answer is read out loud.
Is my Google One AI Premium plan enough?
No. That covers Google’s apps. You need an API key from Google AI Studio, or an AskWatch subscription with managed Gemini.
Have Google AI Pro or Ultra? Its monthly Google Cloud credit can pay for a Gemini API key — here is how to use it.
The same watch, other models

- Claude on Apple Watch — Anthropic, longer answers, no realtime voice.
- Grok on Apple Watch — xAI, with Grok’s own voices.
- Perplexity on Apple Watch — answers that cite their sources.
