Short answer: there is no official ChatGPT app for Apple Watch. OpenAI ships ChatGPT for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web. It has never shipped a watchOS app, and the request has been open on OpenAI’s own community forum for years. Anything you see on a wrist today is a third-party app talking to OpenAI’s API — including this one.
Why there is nothing official
Google put Gemini on Wear OS watches. Apple has not opened the same door, and OpenAI has not walked through it on its own: the ChatGPT iPhone app has no Apple Watch companion, so there is no complication, no wrist dictation and nothing to open from a watch face.
That leaves two honest routes. You can wire a Shortcut to the OpenAI API yourself and run it from Apple Watch — it works, it is free, and it gives you one round trip with no conversation, no history and no voice reading the answer back. Or you use an app built for the wrist. This page is about the second.
What AskWatch gives you
You raise your wrist, speak, and the answer comes back on screen and read aloud. No phone in your hand. Once the settings have been cached, the Apple Watch keeps working when the iPhone is out of range, as long as the watch itself has a connection.

The list comes from the app’s live model catalog, so it changes when OpenAI’s does.
OpenAI Live — full duplex on your wrist
Ordinary voice assistants run a round trip: you finish talking, it thinks, it answers. OpenAI Live (gpt-live-1) is the first true full-duplex voice model in AskWatch: it listens while it speaks, so you can interrupt it mid-sentence, change the question or say “shorter”, and the conversation keeps flowing. It can also search the web, control your home or save a note while you talk. You get 13 voices, three GPT-5.6 backend models and your own opening greeting — on Apple Watch, iPhone, Mac and in CarPlay, with your own OpenAI API key.
AskWatch’s other Live engines — OpenAI’s earlier realtime models, Gemini and Grok — also answer in real time, but they pause the microphone while the answer plays from the speaker.
OpenAI is one of three providers in AskWatch with Live at all — Anthropic and Perplexity publish no realtime voice API, so with Claude or Sonar you get dictation and spoken answers, but not a live back-and-forth. If Live is why you are here, start with OpenAI Live.
Two ways to pay, and you pick
Bring your own API key
Paste an OpenAI API key once on iPhone and every model above is unlocked, on every device you own. You pay OpenAI directly for what you use and AskWatch takes nothing. Keys are held in iCloud Keychain, which is what carries them to your other devices without typing them again.
Or subscribe and skip the key
If you do not want an API account, AskWatch+ and AskWatch Ultra include managed OpenAI models — the app talks to our proxy and there is no key to manage. AskWatch+ covers GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-4.1 Mini. Ultra adds GPT-6 Luna, GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-4.1.
The free tier gives you two providers, and three sessions a day each of Voice Chat, Live and Comparison — enough to find out whether asking your watch is a habit you actually want.
Setting it up
- Install on iPhone. One App Store listing covers iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and CarPlay.
- Choose OpenAI. Either paste an API key from platform.openai.com, or start a subscription and skip that step.
- Install on Apple Watch from the Watch app on your iPhone, then pick the model you want the watch to start on. It is set per device on purpose — the model you want on a wrist is rarely the one you want on a Mac.
What it will not do
Worth knowing before you install, because most pages about this leave it out:
- No images or documents from the wrist. Several OpenAI models read pictures and files, but only where you can hand them one — iPhone, iPad or Mac. A watch has nothing to attach.
- It needs a connection. Cached settings survive; answers do not. No signal, no answer — from any provider, in any app of this kind.
- Dictation is watchOS dictation. Long or technical questions are better started on iPhone; conversation history is shared, so you can pick the thread back up on your wrist.
- It is not Siri. You open the app or a complication. It cannot answer from a raised wrist, and it does not replace what Siri already does with timers, messages and the smart home.
Questions people actually ask
Is there a free way to use ChatGPT on Apple Watch?
Yes, two. A Shortcut with your own OpenAI API key is free to build, though you still pay OpenAI per request. AskWatch is free to download and its free tier includes three sessions a day each of Voice Chat, Live and Comparison; bringing your own key stays free of any AskWatch charge for good.
Does it work on Apple Watch Ultra, SE and older models?
It runs on any Apple Watch new enough for the app’s minimum watchOS version, and that includes SE and every Ultra. Ultra owners get the loudest speaker of the range, which matters more here than it sounds — the answer is read out loud.
Can I use a ChatGPT Plus subscription instead of an API key?
No, and no third-party app can. A ChatGPT Plus account gives you OpenAI’s own apps; the API is a separate product with separate billing. That is why the choice here is an API key or an AskWatch subscription.
What about a Shortcut?
A Shortcut is a genuinely good answer for one-off questions and costs nothing extra. What it will not give you is a conversation that remembers the previous turn, an answer read aloud, a model picker, or Live. Use whichever fits.
Does the watch work without my iPhone nearby?
Yes, once the settings have been cached — on a run with a cellular Apple Watch, or on Wi-Fi. The phone is needed for setup, not for asking.
Other models on the same watch
Choosing a provider is not a one-time decision — AskWatch carries every provider below and more, and you switch on the watch itself:
- Claude on Apple Watch — Anthropic’s models, longer answers, no realtime voice.
- Gemini on Apple Watch — the one Google put on Wear OS and not on watchOS.
- Grok on Apple Watch — xAI, including Grok’s own voices reading the answer.
- Perplexity on Apple Watch — answers with sources, for when the question is factual.
