Short answer: yes — Live Conversation in AskWatch is a real-time voice conversation on Apple Watch. OpenAI, Google and xAI publish no Apple Watch app with their voice modes. AskWatch connects to their realtime voice APIs: OpenAI Live, OpenAI Realtime, Gemini Live and Grok Voice. On the watch the conversation runs on the watch itself, over Wi-Fi or cellular, through AskWatch’s relay — the iPhone does not carry it.

Four voice engines
- OpenAI Live — full duplex: it listens while it speaks, so you can cut in at any moment. A reasoning model does the thinking behind the voice: with your own key you choose it, on Ultra it is GPT-6 Luna.
- OpenAI Realtime — OpenAI’s realtime voice model, Standard or Mini.
- Gemini Live — Google’s live voice models, Standard or 3.8 Live.
- Grok Voice — xAI’s voice model with your own xAI key.
Each engine speaks in its own voices, and you pick the voice per engine on your iPhone or on the watch. When more than one engine is set up, you choose which one to talk to.
Cutting in while it talks
With OpenAI Live you can interrupt on every device — unless you switch on Mute microphone while the assistant speaks. With the other three engines, Bluetooth headphones on iPhone and Mac let you interrupt too (USB audio does not count); on the open speaker the microphone pauses while the AI answers, so its own voice does not echo back, and Skip ends the answer. On Apple Watch with Bluetooth headphones, interrupting is a setting of its own: Interrupt the assistant, off until you turn it on.
What it can do while you talk
- Search the web — with Gemini, Grok and OpenAI Live; OpenAI Realtime answers without a search.
- Control your home — with Home Assistant connected and switched on for Live Conversation, ask it to turn things on and off while you talk (PRO or a subscription).
- Your notes — it can search, save and edit notes in your private AskWatch notebook (PRO or a subscription, and AI access to notes switched on).
- Where you are and Apple Maps — with Location & Maps for AI on and the provider allowed, it can use your position and open a route in Apple Maps (5 free uses, unlimited with PRO or a subscription).
- Today’s facts — the date and time, and the weather, exchange rates and stocks you switched on in Real-Time Context, whenever recent data is available.
On Apple Watch
Start Live from its complication, from a Control Center control or with the Action Button through a shortcut. Choose a layout that fits your watch — Large, Medium or Compact. Lowering your wrist does not stop the conversation; leaving the app does. With Assistant speaks first, the AI greets you as soon as the conversation opens, with a greeting you can write yourself. With history on, your Live conversations are saved in the watch’s history. In the watch’s settings each engine has its own Live volume, and the Digital Crown sets the system volume there — not while the AI is talking.
On iPhone, Mac and in CarPlay
The same four engines run on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and in your car through AskWatch in CarPlay. Live conversations are saved to your chat history.
Your own key or a subscription
With your own key, all four engines are available and you pay the provider for what you use. The free version allows 3 Live Conversations a day; PRO, a one-time purchase, removes that limit. Without any key, the subscriptions include daily Live time:
- AskWatch+ — Gemini 3.8 Live and GPT Realtime mini.
- AskWatch Ultra — the same plus OpenAI Live, with 3× more Live time every day than AskWatch+.
Each conversation has a time limit, shorter on Apple Watch than on iPhone, to protect battery and cost; start the next one to keep going. On a subscription, conversations on Mac and in CarPlay have a time limit too. Grok Voice works with your own xAI key only.
What it will not do
- Not on Apple TV. Live Conversation is on Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, Mac and CarPlay.
- No push-to-talk. It is a hands-free conversation that keeps listening.
- Set up on the iPhone first. API keys are added in the iPhone app; the watch takes them from there.
Questions people ask
Is there a ChatGPT voice mode on Apple Watch?
OpenAI publishes no Apple Watch app. In AskWatch, Live Conversation with OpenAI Live or OpenAI Realtime gives you a spoken conversation with OpenAI’s voice models on the watch, with your own OpenAI key or a subscription.
Can I use Gemini Live on Apple Watch?
Yes. AskWatch runs Gemini Live on the watch with your own Google AI key, or with AskWatch+ and Ultra, which include Gemini 3.8 Live.
Does it need my iPhone?
You add your keys or the subscription on the iPhone once. After that, the conversation runs on the watch itself over Wi-Fi or cellular.
Can I interrupt the AI?
Yes with OpenAI Live, on every device. With the other engines you can interrupt with Bluetooth headphones (on the watch, with the Interrupt the assistant setting); on a speaker, Skip ends the answer.
How long can I talk?
Each conversation has a time limit, shorter on Apple Watch than on iPhone; then you start a new one. With your own key and PRO there is no daily limit. On a subscription, Live time is limited per day, and Ultra has 3× as much as AskWatch+.
